Biography
|
Sarah started paddling at the young age of 9 with the Valley River Runners, a local paddling club in
the Ottawa Valley. In August 1994, she attended her first race at the
Madawaska Kanu Centre in Barry's
Bay and has not looked back. In her junior years, Sarah dominated the women's class in Canada; she was
a four-time Canadian Junior National Champion, and a member of the Junior National Team. From 1999-2001,
Sarah competed at either the Junior World or Pre-World Championships each year. Once entering the senior
category, she joined the Senior National Team program, competing at various World Championships, World
Cups and Pan American Championships. Sarah has since won many national medals including two Senior
National Championships and has competed in 7 World Championship events.
Sarah competed in her first Olympic Games in Beijing 2008. It was a remarkable achievement after years of hard work. Following the Games, Sarah returned to Carleton University to complete her Engineering Degree while still continuing to train full time. She graduated in the spring of 2010. Despite being so busy Sarah finds time to pursue other interests as well. She is a Clean Air Champion which involves speaking at local schools about improving air quality through reducing personal greenhouse gas emissions. She is also part of the Bell Canada Athlete Executive Mentorship Program and the Canadian Olympic Committee's Olympic Voice and Adopt and Athlete Program where she has been paired with Dunlop Public School in Ottawa. Sarah is now working towards her goal of a top 10 finish at the London Olympic Games in 2012. |
